Polaroids, also known as digitals or snapshots in the modeling industry, are simple, unretouched photos that show the natural appearance of a model. They are an essential part of a model presentation and serve to give clients an authentic view of the model during the selection process. This is also where the name "Polaroids" comes from, as these snapshots are an analog representation and cannot easily be manipulated. Polaroids are ideally taken in daylight, as natural light provides accurate color rendering and good lighting. Many modeling agencies use terraces as a setting for taking Polaroids. Polaroids can be taken by the models themselves or in collaboration with another person.
The following guidelines should be observed when taking Polaroids:
- Natural light: Take the photos in daylight, preferably against a simple, light-colored background.
- No makeup: The model should wear no or very minimal makeup.
- Simple clothing: Wear simple clothing such as a plain T-shirt and jeans or leggings, and avoid black clothing.
- Various poses: Take photos from the front, side, and back. Ensure that both the face and body are clearly visible.
- Facial expression: The model should have a natural, relaxed expression; smiling portrait shots are encouraged.
- Hairstyling: The hair should be simple and natural, either worn loose or in a style that doesn't cover the face.
- Photo quality: Ensure the photos are sharp and clear, without filters or editing.
